She was selected as a member of the Indian contingent to Mos¬cow and was the youngest participant at th Moscow Olympics. At the Asian Games at New Delhi, Usha did incredibly welt by bagging two silver medals. But neither she nor her countrymen were very happy, Perhaps, she had aroused too many expectations in the hearts of her admirers. Usha continued to win several medals at various athletic meets at her home state Kerala and at many other national and international competitions. The Jakarta meet in 1985 was a landmark in Usha’s athletic career because here she got a chance to defeat her old rival, Lydia of Philippines, and won five gold medals and one silver medal. Usha became so popular in Jakarta that one of the Indonesian newspapers even nicknamed her ‘The Indian Gold Company’. Usha had caught the imagination of the Indian public by her wonderful performance at 1984 Los Angeles Olympics where she narrowly lost a medal by one hundredth of a second.

Her greatest moment of triumph, however, came when she participated in the 1986 Asian Games at Seoul, South Korea. Here, she reached the height of her glory with four gold medals and one silver. No one doubted now that a star was born in Asia, none doubted her quality as an international athlete.

How could be warn them of the approach of such a terrible enemy ? Would it not be natural for him to roar if it were a lion, or hiss with a wriggling motion if it were a snake ? By this means his comrades would quickly understand what he meant, and so prepare themselves against attack.

We cannot be absolutely sure, but this is probably how language began. Having once found that he had a voice, primitive man would want to go on using it. No doubt he was very proud of his new accomplishment and wished to show it off at every opportunity. So gradually, in the course of many hundreds of years, he learnt to give everything a special noise. All these various noises in the end grew into our modern words.

Soon our primitive man had coined a word or words for each thing he wanted to talk about, and, in addition, another word or words to say something about each thing. Later he must have found a way of connecting the two, so as to express a whole though in words.
